Black hole, by photographer Fabian Oefner

The Black Hole series is so spectacular, it almost seems unreal… Yet the concept behind these vibrantly-coloured paint-splashes is actually quite simple.

Fabian Oefner, a 29-year old Swiss photographer who clearly likes to have fun with paint, created this series by dripping various shades of acrylic colours onto a metallic rod that was connected to a drill. When switched on, the paint started to move away from the rod, creating these amazing-looking images.

The motion of the paint happened in a blink of an eye, just milliseconds after the drill was turned on. To capture the moment, where the paint forms that distinctive shape, Fabian connected a sensor to the drill, which sent an impulse to the flashes. These specialized units were capable of creating flashes as short as a 1/40000 of a second, freezing the motion of the paint.
